Hiring a contractor
1. Check the contractors license number. This is typically a 7 digit number such as 694070. You can verify this by contacting the California State License Board or the CSLB for short. You can also visit their website at www.cslb.ca.gov 2. See if the contractor is bonded and insured. Ask for a certificate of insurance from their insurance provider. Make sure they have workman's compensation insurance along with the general liability insurance. 3. Check at least three references that are current, not three years old etc. Don't hesitate to call or email the references, most are happy to express their experiences with their contractor and his/her employees. 4. Review the contract thoroughly. Make sure all your requests for your project are detailed. Don't assume that the contractor understands what you want, make sure it is written. 5. Lastly, get to know the contractor, ask lots of questions even if you think they are silly. More than likely your relationship with him/her will be long. Some projects last a couple of weeks, others last as long as a year, you want to make sure that you can get along with them. Ask them how long they have been in business. After all, they will be invading your privacy for a duration of time. Nothing could be worse than having a bad relationship that lasts for six months.
